Drunk woman left with £300 bill after accidentally ordering Uber to Newcastle

A drunk woman ended up with more than a hangover the next morning when she accidentally booked an Uber to Newcastle.

Helen Dryden, 25, wanted to get from London back to Guildford, a trip which should have cost about £80.

Unfortunately, she had forgotten to update the ‘home’ settings in her app, so that it still said Newcastle (which is where she went to university).

She fell asleep in the car, and didn’t realise anything was wrong until the driver woke her up close to Milton Keynes to check she was sure she wanted to go on such a long trip.

The driver then did a U-turn and took her 75 miles back – with the whole trip costing  £275 in total.

Helen said: ‘I couldn’t believe it. The whole day ended up costing me about £400.

‘I feel so embarrassed. I was a bit too drunk and just fell asleep.

‘I was devastated when I woke up. I feel really stupid and completely ridiculous.

‘I got too drunk. I’m supposed to be getting more responsible as I get older but it’s not happening so far.’

Helen had been out day drinking in Shoreditch, and by the time she Helen decided to make her way home at around 1am she had missed her last train.

Her only option – other than shelling out for a hotel room – was to order an Uber for the 30 mile trip to Guildford for £80.

‘I thought I said I wanted to go to Guildford when I got in,’ she said. ‘But I can’t remember what his reply was.

‘He woke me up and said ‘are you sure you want to go to Newcastle?’

‘I said ‘what, no! Why would I want to go to Newcastle?’

‘I ended up getting home at about 4am.

‘I take responsibility for it because I got too drunk.

‘It’s the first time I’ve ever done something like this. I’m devastated by it. It’s too much money to comprehend.’

To add insult to injury, Helen says she still hasn’t paid the bill because the card she paid on has insufficient funds.

The payment will be processed on pay day at the end of the month.

An Uber spokeswoman said: ‘We are currently looking into this issue.’
